Purpose. Supervisors use this template to plan and record short safety talks with their team on a specific hazard, incident or change.

1.Purpose

A toolbox talk is a ten to fifteen minute team briefing on one safety topic. It is used to share lessons from incidents, introduce a new procedure or product, and remind workers of controls before a higher risk task such as an outbreak response or a large animal movement. Every talk must be recorded on this template.

2.Preparing the talk

Choose one topic and prepare three key messages. Read the relevant procedure beforehand and bring any equipment, product label or safety data sheet you want to show. Check the WHS Incident and Hazard Register for recent incidents related to the topic.

3.Delivering the talk

Deliver the talk at the start of shift in the work area. State the topic and why it matters, explain the controls, demonstrate where possible and invite questions. Ask workers for hazards they have noticed. Agree on any actions and who will do them.

4.Recording attendance

Every attendee must print and sign their name. Workers who were rostered but absent must be briefed individually and added to the record with the date they were briefed.

5.Filing

The completed record must be given to the Operations Manager within two working days and filed with the site training records. Actions arising must be entered in the WHS Incident and Hazard Register if they relate to a hazard.
